Big Bulls of the Bayous
The message is clear from the first license plate you spot in Louisiana. This "sportsman's paradise" offers the famed Mississippi Flyway and great fishing in the Bayou country surrounding the Gulf of Mexico. For light tackle and fly anglers, the red drum, or redfish, has steadily risen to become a highly sought prize. If there has ever been a time to fish Louisiana, be the target redfish, or billfish, the next few months and years may be the best. The fish are there. The services are coming back and you will never in the rest of your fishing life find people more happy to see you. Our new sportfishing package targets trophy reds, along with sea trout and other saltwater species. Expert local captains will guide you through the labyrinth of marshland waterways to help you find the fish. After your fishing, enjoy surprisingly good accommodations with air-conditioned comfort and savory Cajun cooking.
Louisiana, United States
After an early breakfast at the lodge, you'll depart for your fishing day. Bring plenty of sunscreen and get ready to experience some of America's best fishing. The low-lying marsh-fringed stretch of Louisiana arguably comprises North America's most famous saltwater fishing landscape. While Hurricanes Katrina and Rita carved up miles of marshland, there's still plenty left. And while the storms displaced some fish, the populations themselves were not injured. In fact, scientists have seen no decrease in populations of redfish, trout, black drum and the like. Ironically, in the short term, the fish -- and fishing -- may benefit from the changes. The marsh sloughing off into open water is a huge new source of organic input -- a boon for shrimp and crabs and, by extension, for fish further up the food chain. Meanwhile, the corrugated marsh edges have created new pockets of nursery habitat for fish such as sea trout.
Early morning typically finds redfish on the feed and topwater lures, such as spook-type baits, can be very effective. Shallow diving lures, jigs and flies will also trigger strikes. Tidal changes play a role in fish activity. Redfish typically range from 10-20 pounds in this area, with larger trophy class fish in the 25 to 40-plus pound range. In good conditions, catches of 10-50 redfish a day are the norm, and 100-fish days are not unheard of. Sea trout typically range from 2 to 6 pounds.
Fishing schedules may have some dependence on tidal and other weather factors.
Limits on catch are: 25 trout and 5 redfish.
