monkey fish (a.k.a jungle vegetation) and perhaps an occasional fellow homo sapien.
Last month, our Thailand fishing guide par excellence, Jean Francois Helias, added another creature to this list – a 50-pound monitor lizard. The modern-day dinosaur savagely attacked his topwater buzz bait, while Danish photographer Johnny Jensen fired away with his camera. After a boisterous battle, the monitor played possum in hopes of engaging a less-resistant prey.
Such unexpected anecdotes are par for many of our more exotic adventures. In March, we’ll be joining Jean Francois in Thailand, not for lizards but for the voracious Giant Snakehead. While this amazing predator has certain reptilian features, it’s guaranteed 100% fish.
Other species we’ll be targeting include the monstrous Mekong catfish, Siamese carp and the barramundi. The 10-day trip will visit three unique fisheries and feature lodging from a first-rate tourist hotel to a traditional floating house. In addition to fishing, you’ll be able to experience authentic Thai culture and cuisine. And if you have an extra ten dollars, there’s a two-hour traditional massage with your name on it!
This exotic angling adventure runs March 9-19, and costs $3450, plus airfare to Bangkok. The trip will be escorted by Scott Swanson of FishQuest, and guided by Jean Francois and his pro-staff FishAsia team. Space on the trip is limited to 8 anglers. Half the spots have already been spoken for, so contact Scott at FishQuest for more information.
And remember, the pointy end goes into the fish!
