Surprising Suriname!

Monster catfish - world record status
action bait-fishing for all three species. Traida up to 23 pounds, surubim to 14 pounds and some awesome red-tails kept for tight lines.

One monster red-tail took nearly a half-hour to land. It finally weighed in at a whopping 104 pounds -- which exceeds the current IGFA all-tackle world record! Certification of the fish is pending.

Equally impressive was the virgin rainforest setting, where the immaculate Kabalebo Nature Resort and its comfortable fishing outpost, Uncle Piete’s Camp, are located. Lush primary forest vegetation translated into tall flowering trees, amazing birdlife, butterflies galore, several species of monkeys, two big anacondas, caimans, river otters and an assortment of creatures. The mountainous geography includes spectacular waterfalls and expansive vistas not seen in most Amazon fishing regions.

Suriname’s capital, Paramaribo, is easily reached from Miami, via Trinidad, and there are reports that American Airlines may soon be flying there direct. While the resort can accommodate up to 20 people for eco-adventure activities, it limits its fishing to just 4-6 angler a week. Prime time for lure/fly fishing is typically from September through December, with cut bait fishing effective January to May.
