Mexico Bass Lake
Gets New Life
Once regarded as one of Mexicoís best bass spots, Mateos was nearly drained in 1994 to meet agricultural demands. As the water dropped, fishing pressure faded and then almost disappeared. Today, Mateosí bass population has come back strong and fast, and itís not uncommon for anglers to have 100-fish days.
Located in the Sierra Madre Mountains, Mateos is an hourís drive from Culiacan in Sinaloa state. Itís about two hours from renowned Lake El Salto, but anglers will find major differences. Instead of the partially submerged trees abundant at El Salto, Mateos has brush and trees along the shoreline edges. Open areas between these brush clumps provide wondrous bassing opportunities for everything from topwater baits to plastic worms.
Scouts claim the 50-mile-long lake is the best theyíve found for fishing spinnerbaits, and report thereís also super action using crankbaits along Mateosí many ridges and islands. Youíll fish from new 18-foot fiberglass custom bass boats with 85 hp Yamaha engines and MinnKota trolling motors.
The new lodge is being constructed on the Humaya River, just five minutes from the launch site near the dam. Deluxe air-conditioned cabins will accommodate 12-18 anglers, with private bath, television and daily maid/laundry service. There will also be a mini-spa and tackle shop.
The menu includes American style buffet breakfast and dinners of filet mignon, jumbo shrimp, chicken, fish and typical Mexican dishes. The package provides open bar, margaritas, beer, soft drinks and bottled water in rooms and boats.
Our packages start at $2050 for 5 days/4 night/3 days fishing. Special coupleís packages and Mateos-El Salto combinations are also available. The season runs September 15 to July 30.
